The Many Benefits of Using GreenStake

The Many Benefits of Using GreenStake

GreenStake is a 100% biodegradable stake used by professionals for many different pinning applications. It’s key feature is that it completely biodegrades and becomes part of the soil after it has done it’s job. It can be used to anchor erosion control blankets, weed barriers, netting, ground covers, germination blankets, agricultural mulch, frost protection fabrics, sod, small trees and plants, tents and tarps. It is used in landscaping, erosion control, sports-ground, golf, turf installation, lawn and garden care businesses all over the world.

GreenStake is specified by engineers, landscape architects, designers, grounds managers, environmental managers, erosion specialists, municipalities and DOTs.

What sizes are available?

GreenStake comes in two different sizes: 4inch and 6inch stakes

How long can I store it for?

GreenStakes will store indefinitely in typical warehouse conditions. The biodegradation process only begins after insertion into the ground.

How does a GreenStake break down and how long does it take?

Greenstake degrad stages

Because it is 100% biodegradable, GreenStake breaks down through natural microbial activity into carbon dioxide, water and humus (compost). It has been designed to maintain holding power for over 18 months before biodegrading. Please note that microbial activity is affected by moisture and temperature and so biodegradation can take longer in different regions.

Will GreenStake damage equipment?

Unlike metal staples or pins, GreenStake will not damage mowing equipment or cause punctures.

Is GreenStake harmful if consumed by animals?

A GreenStake is made from plant-based material derived from wheat and potato starches and will not cause harm to animals should it be consumed by them. That is why GreenStake is being specified by environmentalists for use on farmland drain construction and reclamation projects instead of metal pins.

Organisers of music festivals are recommending campers to use biodegradable stakes instead of metal tent pegs. The world renowned Glastonbury have offered them to campers, they don’t like metal tent pegs being used as they are left in the ground and cause injury to farm animals that graze the fields once the festival is over.

What are the advantages of GreenStake over other stakes?

GreenStake 4inch (10cm) Bundle

GreenStake has a number of advantages over other stakes. It is, after all, the toughest stake in the land.

  1. Greater holding power
GreenStake gives much greater holding power than metal pins and other stakes. That’s because the holding power of any stake is determined by the contact surface area between the stake and the surrounding ground and the mechanical holding provided by barbs on the stake shaft. For a U-shaped metal staple to have the same contact area as the 6” GreenStake it would need to be more than 9½” long. Also, the mechanical holding/snagging action of the barbs on the GreenStake further increases the holding power so that a metal staple would have to be up to12” long to give the same grip. Most other stakes and all metal pins do not have barbs – when GreenStake is pushed, hammered or driven into the ground it is there to stay. Also, when the ground freezes, GreenStake will not be pushed back out as metal pins are.

To illustrate the holding power: A customer uses the 4” GreenStake for installing pond liners in parks, golf courses, etc. It is used to pin the underlay fabric in place while the rubber liner is placed on top. At this point, a single 4” GreenStake is holding 200 lbs (100kg) weight, created by the pull of the rubber liner down the steep slopes at the pond edges. That’s how strong it is.

  1. Engineered for safety
GreenStake material has been engineered to provide toughness and flexibility in applications where there is heavy traffic (people and equipment), including sports grounds, parks, golf courses, residential and recreational areas, playgrounds and wherever equipment such as mowers is used. It’s designed to flex and not break. Other stakes are not flexible and either remain as a rigid object in the ground forever or until they snap causing a jagged and dangerous protrusion from the ground. They present considerable risk of injury to public/staff (leading to higher liability and insurance) or risk to equipment resulting in damage to blades, punctured tires, etc. The tough, flexible nature of GreenStake against the rigid nature of other stakes is very reassuring and we have shaped it so that all surfaces are rounded with no sharp edges.
  2. Better design for better performance
GreenStake has been designed to be tough to penetrate fabric and film and yet has enough elasticity not to shatter when hammered. This means that fewer stakes and less time are wasted on a job due to breakage.

Each stake has a large rounded smooth head with hooked ends. This larger head increases the area over which the downward holding force is applied to fabric and turf and is not as likely to tear through if the fabric or turf is tugged. Metal staples and other stakes have small, sharp heads whereas GreenStake has hooks on the head to ensure that netting and meshes are held in place securely.

GreenStake is the future in safer, more cost-effective staking that is not harmful to the environment – Just drive it into the ground and forget about it.
